Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus by Barbara Park is the first in a series of books that detail the life of a kindergartner named Junie B Jones, as she begins school. The book presents itself from the viewpoint of Junie B. Jones. The book is easy to read. With short sentences and a fairly basic vocabulary, it appeals greatly to younger readers. They relate to the experiences that Junie B. Jones is going through, and they are able to see it in a humorous light. In the first book of the series Junie B Jones tackles the new experience of riding the bus.
This book would be a good way to introduce chapter books to younger kids. One concern that comes along with reading these books is the behavior of Junie B Jones. Junie B Jones isn't always the best role model for these younger readers. Another concern of these books is that they don't follow grammatical rules. Although the books are flawed, I believe that they are a good way to spark the interest of young readers. They will eventually move on from this series, and choose to read books that are of a greater quality.
Teaching Idea: Design a costume for Junie B. Jones to wear.
Reading Level: 1st-3rd grade

I now know that I'm not a huge Junie B. Jones fan. I've read or been read to from a Junie B. book several times over the years. But now I've finally had the opportunity to read one fully myself along with a group of first graders. She is funny and somewhat authentic, but I found her to be a giant example to kids of what not to do or say. I know why kids like ready about her. And I'm not saying I don't find her somewhat funny, but, as I was teaching my group, I found myself saying often, "Did Junie B. make a good choice?" And the answer was usually, "No."
OMG, I gave birth to the real life Junie B Jones.
She even got on the wrong school bus on her first day of kindergarten and caused a big stink.
She loves sharpening pencils down until they're stumps with my electric pencil sharpener, and is in love with band aids.
Needless to say, the real life Junie B loved this book.
Barbara Park must have known a real life Junie B Jones herself, because she has the voice and character down pat.

Read in just a couple readings with Mikey. Since she's "almost six" just like him, he adores her and her funny attitude. I loved that he told me how his kindergarten was the same as or different from hers. Cute series!
