NO NO IT CANT END THERE I NEED TO READ THE NEXT BOOK BOY OH BOY

I loved this, since it's a dark take on Snow White and the seven dwarves. I want to know more about the dwarves' past lives as one is already revealed, it has gripped me through every page and I'll hopefully find the second one soon as I need to know so many things!

I particularly liked the different point of views, so some questions didn't go unanswered (eg what happens to characters that split it).

The humour is really quite good, with its use of cuss words along with sarcastic dry humour (mainly from grouchy and snow in his flash backs). To be honest I would love to have a book about snow's life with the dwarves with all the dry humour experienced in said flashbacks.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes dark fiction tied in with fairy tales.

Now onto the next book (if i can find it)

What I liked about this book (first in a trilogy) was that it starts right away when the prince kisses Snow. Of course if you have read the synopsis, you know that she somehow turns into a zombie and you already know how she entered that deep sleep based off of Walt Disney’s classic Snow White and the seven dwarfs. Speaking of those tiny little men, their names have been changed for comical reasons (at least in my opinion.) One of the many point of views comes from Grouchy and he is well, grouchy and mean and also in love with Snow which makes this one strange love story. The six remaining dwarfs (who also have point of views but are less mentioned) include: Merry, Bones, Blushful, Dim, Snoozy and coughy.

So we have these little dwarfs trying to find a way to survive with Snow for she is zombie-like and not the girl that was nesting in their house. They are forced to think on their feet because unlike the normal zombies, these “horrors” are quick and ruthless for blood. As her army of dead people grows in number, the dwarfs are left with no choice but to go find a Dr. Killington in Abundance. The adventure begins and the dwarfs dwindle in number but are made up for some new characters, which unfortunately, are public enemies and must band together to survive. This at least provided some funny dialogue and funny situations while the world is in chaos.

The story takes you to all sorts of different places as they all hide and fight for their life. We are even taken to a mining cave and the dwarf’s mention that they whistle while they work but not for musical purposes.

Things that I didn’t like about this book, which I hate saying, was that some of the dialogue was repetitive. For example, Battson tended to say “I’m just saying” and it got a bit annoying for he said it a lot. It didn’t help that most of the chapters are about two pages long. Still, he was the character that you love to hate and I enjoyed getting to know him.

If you enjoy fairy tales mixed with blood and so much gore, then pick up this series. The second book will be titled "That Wicked Apple" and will be out next year.

I received this book as part of a First Reads giveaway and I was intrigued by the premise. Unfortunately, for me, the writing left a lot to be desired. Why have chapters devoted to individual characters when it's told through third person? Why replace the word 'fucking' with 'fumping'? It's meant to be an adult novel after all. There were too many characters at the beginning of the story to be easily kept track of and I didn't connect with any of them. In short, I was very grateful to have the opportunity to read this, but it wasn't for me at all.

Rob Boley’s That Risen Snow: A Scary Tale of Snow White and Zombies (The Scary Tales Book 1) is a roller coaster ride of zombies, unrequited love, curses, swearing, racism, dwarfs with PTSD, drugs, and a wicked queen. It picks up where the story of Snow White usually leaves off: with the prince’s kiss. That kiss wakes Snow, but who knew the continuing curse would cause her to wake up as a zombie?! The prince is her first victim–naturally, transformed into a zombie himself by her bite–but certainly not her last. It’s up to her rapidly diminishing collection of dwarf friends to save… well, themselves, because it’s a little late for Snow!

A dwarf called Bones brought together a group of dwarfs who needed his help. Each one has his own demons to slay, whether it be a drug habit or an anger management problem. Grouchy is in love with Snow, but he’s a little busy saving himself and the other dwarfs to figure out how to help Snow–or if it’s even possible to do so. When he runs into the prince’s troops–you didn’t think a prince just went gallivanting around the countryside alone, did you?–we see more than a glimpse of the racism that exists between the dwarfs and the humans. Of course that eventually takes a back seat to the growing horde of zombies.

True Loves Kiss will break the spell, at least that is what the 7 dwarves are told when Snow bites into the old hag's poisoned apple. Only Snow doesn't awaken the way the dwarves suspect she will... oh no, she awakens as a very hungry, very angry zombie. As soon as Prince Mikail kisses Snow, she bites him, spreading the disease the dwarves are calling the "Horror". As the plague spreads, the Horrors begin to chase the remaining dwarves and the prince's soldiers.

Although the story was very fast paced and kept me on the edge of my seat, I found myself rolling my eyes at some points because it became a bit repetitive after awhile. The writing was definitely not the best and the made up curse words were a bit silly, but overall it was enjoyable most of the time. The ending came quite abruptly and seemed to be just thrown in there though. I did really like Grouchy as a main character. He was extremely sarcastic and witty which made me smile. I also found the switching of POVs interesting.

I rather enjoyed this, especially as it is told from the perspective of Grumpy and the other dwarves. I was however a bit disappointed to see that I'll have to go after the next book to finish up this story, or most likely continue on as it seems that everybody is writing a trilogy now. *sigh*...

A delightfully gruesome take on the story of Snow White and her "resurrection" from death-by-apple. I've avoided reading retellings since "Wicked" turned out to be all political commentary and no fun, but apparently all it takes is gore, zombies, and humor. Imagine the best parts of Gregory Maguire and Sam Raimi did Snow White and that's basically the awesomeness you're in for.
