john green never misses. all of his works are so brilliantly written and of course this book is no exception. the way he discribes the struggle of living with mental health disorders without ever explicitly saying the object of the struggle is immensely impressive. Greens writing is the definition of ‘show don’t tell’

This is definitely a YA book and with a heavy theme of mental illness, told beautifully by weaving in friendship, love and family.

However, that being said, I didn’t feel like the intended audience at this time. Kudos to John Green for tackling this topic! I know there is a movie coming about it and may be seeing a screening and hearing from the author in the weeks ahead.

UPDATE - The screening was amazing at the LA Times Festival of Books last weekend and it was followed by a panel including John Green. I came to understand and appreciate the book even more as a result! It will be released on May 2nd and is a wonderful adaptation of the book - a few differences but ones that enhance the story in the visual format of a film.

May update review after that!

I really liked this book as someone with OCD. I thought it was a really good representation of OCD and mental illness and how it does just go away it goes up and down. I would definitely recommend this book to people who have friends or family with OCD or if you have OCD I felt it was a therapeutic experince

I really enjoyed this book which I read for one of my Library book clubs. I could really relate to Aza and her struggles with intrusive thoughts. So many of us have wonky brains or struggle with mental health. I also really liked that the focus of the story was on introspection and friendship not romance.
