This book took me a long while to get through. Sometimes the chapters were so meaningful I had to take time to collect my thoughts; other times I was speed reading because it didn’t feel useful; and other times I fell asleep.

There were some pieces that truly resonated, both on a personal self love level as well as potential romantic love.

But once you hit the chapter where she talks about religion, I felt that behind every word afterwards. The scripture references, the God talk.. be aware going into the book, if you are still unpacking your own feelings towards religion and spirituality.

bell hooks has, once again, restored my little bit of faith in humanity.

This is a must read in my opinion. Currently ordering a copy of this book for some of my loved ones.

i have very mixed feelings about this book. on one hand, it was nice to read, because it makes me feel better about love while currently going through a pretty bad breakup.
however…
i found a lot of it to be repetitive and entry level/basic ideas. this is a good book to start with i would say, but i was hoping for something more revolutionary. maybe i had too big of expectations (as i usually do oops) and that’s on me.
also! it was very spiritual. i’m spiritual myself and i didn’t mind most of her thoughts of this- even enjoyed it - but at times it lost me. so be aware if you aren’t one for religion/spirituality!
it was also incredibly straight, but as it is a little old of a book, i guess ill let it slide. I’m just not interested in a big chunk of the book bc it doesn’t feel useful in my life since i don’t date men.

“Getting in touch with the lovelessness within and letting that lovelessness speak its pain is one way to begin again on love’s journey.”

“True love does have the power to redeem but only if we are ready for redemption. Love saves us only if we want to be saved.”

Y’all, why bell got me hooked (pun 🤗) from the first sentence? Like omg, she really ATE this book up. As a pretty princess in my 20s, I reckon I will revisit this baddie quite often!
