This was a very good read, with strong characters and a devastating plot. I felt like I was right there in that town, experiencing the opioid crisis. It felt honest and raw, and not gratuitous. It was hard to read at times, only because it felt quite real and affecting, which was the whole point.
My favourite element was the comic book sub plot, it gave the character such dimension and wasn’t used an an overly obvious way to reflect plot.
My only gripe with this book was the length. I think it felt a little too long, that some points had already been made a few times and didn’t need to be made again. It could have still hit as hard by shaving off 150 pages.
Nonetheless I would recommend to people wanting to read about this place and period, it was an engaging account and story.

4.75 stars 🌟 This one is going to stick with me for a while.
I loved how despite his circumstances, Demon remained kind always and in all ways, and I think that's his most memorable trait.
It was a tragic story overall. A story of loss and addiction and hope!
Barbara Kingsolver is a master in storytelling.
One of the best books I've ever read!

Top five ever. I cannot say enough about this book. So dark, so redemptive. So much loneliness, so much love. So much pain, so much healing. A complete window into real people’s lives. Beautiful storytelling that moved me to tears and also had me laughing at such surprising moments. Kingsolver became an 9 year old foster boy in rural Virginia and then grew up— became a teenager, talented, in love, addicted, sober, and on the way to whole again as an young adult. Read this book. Get your tissues. But read it.
