This was a cute little book about the consequences of stealing and friendship. I zoomed through the book in like a hour. Its ok, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

A fantastic middle grade novel that would be great for year fives and sixes, especially for kids who have struggled with friendships or might be a bit prone to following rather than leading.
I was gripped enough to read it non-stop, from the suspenseful opening chapter to the happy ending, and thoroughly enjoyed the journey.
I would have liked more character development for Maddie. She felt suitably naive the whole way through, which was great, especially for the court case, but I wanted her to be questioning Samara's friendship just a bit more, and to also have investigated where all the chocolates etc were going.
I appreciated that there were themes of bullying and toxic friendship delivered in quite a subtle way, with complexity given to the manipulative character. If this book were published in the 80s or even 90s, Samara would probably have been written as mean, or cruel, without the family context explaining why she needs Maddie's help.
A solid contemporary middle grade that is possibly overlooked because the cover feels like it's from the early 2000s.
