This is mostly a slice-of-life piece that really sinks into what it feels like to exist in this space of nature and community. I especially adored spending time with a family in the marsh whose home was so loving and warm I keep thinking back to it for comfort.

I am in love with this book.

This was an absolute beautiful poignant storytelling. I was immerse with the each character's individuals stories. I was racing through words in order to find out.

This story follows the life of the Peazant's. It started with Amelia who went back to the Island to study her family's heritage. There she bonded and met her cousin Elizabeth that his a school teacher alongside her family Eli, Eula, Ben and Rebecca. I can still names the other characters. Willis George is married to Sallie Lee who has three children (Amos, Sugar, forgot the other one lol) and Sugarnun their side story is heartbreaking. Ol Trent and with Miss Evangeline too.

The storytelling was entertaining beginning to last even though there was heartbreaking and tender moments but still it was golden.

It was enriching to have the story of the Peazant family along with me this year as I faced my own challenges. Glad I picked this up immediately after watching the movie. Such a rich and powerful story of Black history, legacy, and love. I totally finished the last 10 pages at my local beach too, perfect way to end the read. Julie Dash is the 🐐 ‼️
