Angela got more than she bargained for asking this old lady a question.

But it was a fun read. 3.5 stars.

City of Girls is funny and vibrant. (One side character's typically morose responses made me laugh out loud.) I was impressed with the level of detail in Gilbert's descriptions of people, places, fashion, and dialogue. I didn't know to expect quite so much sex in the book, but if you're not bothered by that, I would recommend it to anyone. I'm looking forward to discussing this one in book club.

Life is not always straight. And this book shows beautifully all the things that got wrong and people who would risk everything and anything to make it right. I am ecstatic with the number and depth of female friendships are portrayed in this book. Gilbert is a straight story teller who dares us into adventures of worldly discovery.

I enjoyed the first 75% of the book much more than the last part. I was also not expecting the book to be so associated with the war. I did not enjoy Vivian and Anthony’s relationship all that much. However, it still gets 5 stars from me. I loved Vivian’s love for New York and the theater setting of the 1940’s. I especially loved Vivian’s self awareness and outlook on life.
