"That is why every war is a civil war; every fallen man resembles one who remains and calls him to account.”

This book resonated with me on so many levels. Civil wars are more similar than anyone would care to admit. I Highlighted so many paragraphs that I ended up not bothering to do that because I know I'm definitely going to be re-reading this novel in the future. Pavese imbues every line with a sense of purpose and silky prose that just makes you want to stop and ponder every word.

Perch'ero entrato quella volta in chiesa? "
