A ‘cozy’ fantasy book, with an intriguing and unique soft magic system. Loveable but flawed characters. 🫶🏻

This was good, I overall enjoyed but it did take me ages to finish. One of those enjoying whilst reading but not thinking about once I put it down type books. The magic system was pretty cool though, outside the box for fantasy I thought.

the premise of having a monster live in the main characters head is great , the execution of this idea is good but not groundbreaking. The romance is insta lovey but I can excuse it bc i do like raven yew. There were moments when i liked elm much more than our fmc and mmc tho. The plot is characters driven . The author leaves the story at a cliffhanger and maintains some intrigue about certain things so i will be reading the sequel :)

Wow, this book!  It's starts slow, you wonder, you slowly start to realize what's happening, then it builds up momentum and by the end you're absolutely enthralled.  It is one of those times I am so relieved that there's already a released book 2 because having to wait for it would be torture.

Elspeth has a magical secret that turns almost everybody into an enemy.  The book starts out tense and never quits.  Who can you trust, how far can you trust them?  And when will the backlash happen?

If you want steamy spice you won't get it.  The slight bit present in the story is done very tastefully as a testament to the depth of feeling as opposed to tantalizing.

The world building is done quite well, the pace starts slow but continually builds in momentum through the entire book and you are firmly hooked by the time you get to the cliffhanger.  The prose is well done, the characters well developed with each one serving a very real purpose in adding to the story.

Speaking of characters, I can't quite figure out Ione.  And honestly I loathe her uncle with his greedy, grasping, worthlessness far more than the evil prince.  The FMC and MMC are spot on, and as is not always the case in stories, I never had an "oh come on!" moment.

I really enjoyed this book and if book 2 is as enjoyable I can see adding a physical copy to my collection.
