Wow, so informative. What I love about the book is that it masterfully put aside the entire issue of the holocaust and focused on the man who started it all. I think that we often overlook the importance of how we got to the event that shocks us.

This book isn’t for everyone. To some it might seem boring or to drag on or not really have a point. For me it was fascinating because it combines history and manga, two of my favorite things. Mizuki’s style transmits information to the reader in ways a traditional written biography of Hitler would not. That is, drawing Hitler like a silly cartoon reflects his true weakness and visions of grandeur, while the more realistic backgrounds in the panels show how very real and serious the consequences of this one man were.

I was a little skeptical while reading that the there is not much mention about the Holocaust, however the forward by Frederik L. Schodt addresses this. He writes for many Japanese the holocaust was a distant part of the war, and is not what people tend to think of in regards to WWII. Whatever the implications and ramifications of that are, it seems that through his Japanese perspective, Mizuki gives us insight to Hitler’s life from a distance. That is to say, regardless of his racism and antisemitism, Hitler was unfit to rule, had visions of grandeur, was emotionally unstable, and had flawed logic. Perhaps it was his humanness (note: not his humanity), that made him such a monster.

If you want to read a shortened version of Hitler's life, this is the book for you. Amazing illustrations with a story that keeps you wanting to turn the page. Another great non-fiction graphic novel. This is the first time reading a true Japanese Graphic Novel and it took some time getting use to reading right to left instead of left to right. I love to read Mizuki's history of Japan as well.

Much like the writer of the introduction of this book, I realized that my whole life I've seen Hitler as some sort of inhuman monster. This work by Shigeru Mizuki places him squarely back inside the human realm. It is important to see Hitler not as inhuman because that prevents us from seeing our own capability for evil. I also appreciated the way Hitler was shown to be pathetic and self-aggrandizing. It was a real take on one of the worst humans. My biggest complaint about this book is the lack of Holocaust representation. It's acknowledged at the beginning and end but this book itself focuses more on the military aspect. I really think that was a big flaw with this. However, I appreciated the perspective of someone (a former soldier of the Imperial Japanese army) who's view we don't often see on this subject. I also want to acknowledge the art and it's jarring and ominous quality. The juxtaposition of comic art and photo-realism was perfect for this.
