Just got this in the mail today and read cover to cover in 2 hours. What a lovely tribute to a very misunderstood breed. Both the stories and the photographs are heartwarming. There's a pit bull in my future, and I am looking forward to the magic!

Stories that run the gamut; from amusing to informative to upsetting. Great photos, too. A good way to learn about the history of this dog breed.

Sweet (and sometimes heartbreaking), I'd give it 5 stars for the pittie pictures alone!

This is a sweet tribute to pit bulls, most notable for its many lovely photos and firsthand accounts from pit bull owners. At times, Foster falls into a bit of a one-note "BEST DOG EVER" tone, betraying a tendency to think of pit bulls as being not only just as good as other dogs, but somehow superior (this can possibly be forgiven, given the number of pit bulls that have stolen his heart). On the other hand, he does a good job of avoiding or confirming some of the pro-pit bull mythology -- for example, he clarifies that there's no evidence that pit bulls were actually known as "nanny dogs," BUT there is ample photographic and written evidence that pit bull-type dogs have been family dogs since the 1800s. He's careful to base everything on facts and on the loving bonds between these dogs and their people, rather than straying too far into polemic.

As the owner of a pit bull-type mutt, I saw a lot of my dog Hank in these photos and in the stories herein. I don't know that pit bulls are inherently more awesome than other dogs, but I DO know that they're not inherently worse. As the title says, they're good dogs.

This was a fast library read that I really only placed on hold because I saw the cover on Amazon and fell in love. With this book, you absolutely can judge it by the cover. If you're looking for cute pictures of pit bulls and interesting anecdotes from throughout the history of the breed, look no further. (Personally, I'm looking forward to a deeper dive with [b:Pit Bull: The Battle over an American Icon|26109029|Pit Bull The Battle over an American Icon|Bronwen Dickey|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1445789865s/26109029.jpg|46054417] next month.)

LOVE, that sums it up. This book is love: the dogs in the pictures are beautiful, the stories are wonderful, the breed is finally getting (back) it's just rewards. Books like this are so in need to restore this lovely dog back to where it once was. YES, pits were once the BELOVED dog of americans! Not the hated, feared breed in recent decades. Random breeds go through a few decades of being the feared outcast...the german shepherd (which I have had 2 and they have both been wonderful, btw), the doberman and yes, even the bloodhound...

Foster has done a beautiful job with this book. I hope more people take a look and learn about the true nature of this pit bull and open their minds and hearts to these amazing dogs.
