This book was wild, the first story was beautiful and then things just went crazy. All the stories are tied together and it was hard for me to connect the dots, but once they did, it was like putting puzzle pieces together. It kind of lost me in the end when (SPOILERS) there was a revolution led by monkeys... I think. I'm not sure.

This is a bit of a complicated review.

I love a short story collection but this feels more like a failed novel and a couple other last minute additions to appease a publisher who wanted to throw another title on the shelf.

There was the possibility of true richness in some of these stories that simply never happened. If I have to hear about Fremont One more time or about neck pains… the problem with that is how flat it makes the characters, how interchangeable and unmemorable. I want to see depth. I want a world to be created so that I can begin to FEEL something. This author is writing about a very specific life experience over and over that he is trying to come to terms with but he never truly invites the reader.

That’s what makes this work a mixed success for me. In so many stories were kept at arms length and told the same details again and again instead of being given the opportunity to experience something new, to be there.

With that in mind, the craft is solid and the reading is easy. I would say don’t read it in a day as I did; it tends to bleed together and lose any weight. But, overall, it’s perfectly fine.

Některé povídky jsou skvělé, jiné mi přijdou takové nijaké.
