Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

Really fun novel about the power of being yourself, turning the other cheek, and unapologetically ignoring negativity and then how most of us fail at this miserably because of our own conceit, and even try to drag others into our own shameful world of insecurity. Be true to yourself. Own your passions and your loves. Never let the sentiments of people who care less than you drive you or your intentions.

This book was amazing! I love the theme of nonconformity in this book and it was a page-turner for me. Stargirl is a character I hope to be like. It made me sad when Stargirl tried to change herself to make others happy, but it made me realize about my own experiences where I have tried to change myself countless times to make others like me. I used to be homeschooled like Stargirl was, but I finally got the chance to go to a real school. In my school years, kids would tease me about my height and my weight, and it would make me upset. I would come home and beg my mother to take me out of the school system and homeschool me again. Now that I'm grown and found myself, I found who I am and who I'm proud and happy to be, I don't care about the stares I get for my funky clothes or the comments I get about how weird my hobbies are. I love myself now and I love the hobbies I do that make me who I am. I don't care if people don't like me because of my style, my skin color, my interests, or my religion. I am proud and happy to be who I am.

A favorite from when i was in elementary school. I spent the afternoon re-reading it. A beautiful ode to those who've been criticized for their nonconformity & indiviuality. And a sweet reminder of how those whose paths we cross stay with us.

{my thoughts} - I was unsure about this book when I first started to read it. I did fall in love with Stargirl. She is a really unique individual that isn’t afraid to be herself. Throughout the entire book she is the girl that seems to have come from another culture, she is outgoing and not afraid to show others who she really is. Towards the end of the book she struggles with the person she is and the person others would like her to be….. This is often the case with many teenagers and is a really nice read for anyone looking for cozy book to read for a couple of days.

{reason for reading} - It was recommended by a friend.

Any review of this by me needs context because clearly this book was not written for me. I was an adult when it first came out and I'm still an adult now, and I only read it today because I was doing laundry at my mother's house and it was on the end table and I needed something that I could finish reading by the time the load was done. I'm rating it a little higher than I was originally inclined because it's clearly beloved by many and I recognise my bias.

The thing is, even as a middle-grade book, it's pretty shallow and overwrought, and it's a manic pixie dream girl before the trope was named. The main character is a nondescript coward, and I didn't really enjoy spending all that time in his first-person POV when he was the least interesting person in the room. The idea that people should feel free to be themselves is a great one. I don't feel like that's the actual message this book delivered. That said, many people who read the book as young people say that's the message they got from it, so what do I know?
