I read this book the first time when I started college. I always said it was one of my favorite books, but now I say with certainty that it is.
The most fascinating and engaging book I have ever read, It made me obsessed again with the Buendia Family and the city of Macondo.
I recommend reading the 50th anniversary edition since it includes a family tree, which facilitates the experience of the book.

Let's begin on a good note; I enjoyed the writing itself.

Now unto the rest.

The story was long winded, convoluted, confusing and tiring. The fact that the character's names continued to be repeated throughout every generation, and the fact that each generation lived a long time, gave me a headache trying to remember who was who, especially since I didn't read this in one sitting.

The characters themselves felt rather two-dimensional to me and I found not even one of them endearing in the least, in fact, almost all of them were irritating or downright unlike-able; their deaths meant nothing to me.

Couple this with the large amount of incest, violence and pretty much pointlessness and you have yourself one long book that after reading leaves you contemplating how much time you wasted.

Very compelling, can’t quite put my finger on why just yet. Will have to read again one day.
