Gute, solide Space-Opera-Unterhaltung, mit ein bisschen *hust* Romanze.

I’m really glad I picked this one up! While this first book is at times weighed down by its objectives, I really enjoyed both Cordelia and Vorkosigan and the introduction to the world and the political manoeuvring the series is known for.

The romance was really enjoyable, and much more central than I anticipated. And while there are a few things that wobbled for me, particularly with the wrap up, I’m glad to finally start sinking my teeth into this world.

The fast-paced space adventure and the star-crossed romance were great and complemented each other nicely. The rape as a weapon of war element could have been more developed, somehow sticking the bad guys with mechanical uteruses full of embryos seems underwhelming, but points for bringing the subject into the story. The denouement was a long slog for me, suddenly very Reagan 80s with lots of military fetishism, dutiful wife of aristocratic soldier shit. Gag. The Aftermath chapter, meant as a space war is hell message, was beautiful and moving. I am a sucker for derelict spacecraft and corpsicles. I would read more from this series but I don’t think I will seek them out just yet.

Phenomenal book. Violent at times, but also tender.

DNFed at 22% (p60).  I'm bored, but also this is very clearly a product of it's time when it comes to gendered and sexual violence, which I'm just not keen to read.
