Writer needs a hood therapist instead of writing this book. Patronising and dated in its views it just made me angry that people thought this was concise and good!
Also, personally I had dealt with anise disclosures at work recently and seh talks too much about her personal abuse instead of making this an academic text.

Some parts of this book were great, others I was left disappointed. In the beginning I felt like I was really going to learn something but as the book progressed this felt more like a collection of essays all on a similar topic with not much direction.  Perhaps some of this is just too outdated at this point. I didn’t appreciate the spiritual/religious tie ins and wasn’t expecting that when I picked this book up. At many points I was left wondering how any person could practice love the way she suggested!! And perhaps we would all be happier if we accepted that love is not this rigid pre defined thing that can only exist in one way. Overall I liked some chapters and hated others.

An absolute must read.

““We all long for loving community. It enhances life’s joy. But many of us seek community solely to escape the fear of being alone. Knowing how to be solitary is central to the art of loving. When we can be alone, we can be with others without using them as means of escape.”

The themes are familiar (especially when compared to the years 2000 and 2023), but its perspective on finding love in a society that continues to promote lovelessness is still relevant.

I was wondering "what is it with love and our culture ?" (A certain type of) love seems to be everywhere in the media and in social norms, and nowhere in theory and philosophy, and general social sciences. Then I picked up this book, and it helped me articulate a lot of things. For most of the book I just thought "that's it exactly!"

Essential reading.
