really good! wells starts playing with some of the worldbuilding themes that come out super strong in ile-rien and the books of the raksura. the world of the book has existed for a long time and is littered with mysterious relics of the past that the present economy runs on, but it’s not done in an annoying way. also not everyone is human, there are consequences, but no moralizing. the story is like post-apocalyptic indiana jones with more class struggle. it was almost too long & the plot almost took one twist too many, but she pulled it off.

Another excellent and dense fantasy read from Wells that I thoroughly enjoyed. Set in a fantasy post-apocalyptic world (not ours), our inhuman protagonist Khat is roped into a conspiracy surrounding ancient relics and the city's top power players. And the idea that the novel plays with of the world's very future being endangered by rich people playing with forces of nature they cannot control is one that just hit a little close to home. Wells just has a great knack for writing really great characters--even her secondary and tertiary characters were interesting.
