This is such an interesting story, especially coming from Leigh Bardugo. I loved the setting, and all the world building. This felt really 2010s with the main romance, I won’t say anything more to ruin it. I also liked the sprinkling of LGBTQIA+ in the mix.

Historic Fantasy, Romance Subplots, 1 🔥

“Maybe there really was a demon inside her. One that craved feather beds and fine food and applause.”
― Leigh Bardugo, The Familiar

In Spain’s golden age a scullion, an immortal, a lucky monster and a mistress set out in a tournament of miracles; or so they believe. The historical fantasy progresses with a heavy focus on religious and cultural oppression. These beautifully flawed characters attempt to survive if only to be, to have something more in their fates.

This was just fine. It felt like some of the elements could have been fleshed out a bit more and made amazing. I enjoyed the different perspectives we got as well as the setting but I don’t think this book will stand out in my memory over time.

A great book with characteristic Bardugo strengths of writing and character, but needed to be 100-200 pages longer to flesh out the intricacies and themes to their full potential
