This was a stay-up-all-night read, one of the reasons I gave it five stars (I may adjust as I get a little distance from it).
Lovely characterization, and a nicely balanced plot weighted with courtly intrigue (without involving excessive violence or sexuality, hey!). Maia is a deeply sympathetic character who deals not only with the challenges of his new position but with PTSD from an abusive past, and handles all of it with as much grace as he can muster -- which sometimes is not very much.
Despite Maia's relative youth, I find myself classing him with some of my favorite characters like Bujold's Lupe dy Cazaril or Dag -- he has much of that same sense of trying his best as the waves of life keep slapping him in the face.
I borrowed this from the library but I'll definitely need to get my own copy to reread.

I loved this, it read like a really good drama film. There were bits where I found myself skimming a bit, but that was few and far between
