Poignant but I felt there was something lacking from the character development that I was really looking forward to seeing.

This story was beautiful, devastating, haunting, raw, captivating,,,, and and and,,,, I finished this book in a couple hours, only pausing to come home from the beach and shower. I do think the writing style and structure of the book was really interesting and it is very different from the structure of what I usually read. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did, but I don’t think I could read many books like this at once— they’d have to be sprinkled in here and there. Overall I really enjoyed this and look forward to whatever Fatima Asghar writes next.

I liked this, but again, didn’t stand out.

This one felt a lot like the color purple. A tragic coming-of-age tale in which the main daughter/sister/girl/woman questions her own faith because of the life she’s forced to live. For this, I admire the work. It was easy to read yet reflective.

However, I am left wondering if I will remember it as much as I did the color purple. I would’ve loved more reflection about Kausar’s faith in Allah throughout many points in the book. I think that there were many quick snapshots of struggle, love, identity, and survival. Overall, I would dub this as a hybrid of the color purple and the house on mango street, but lacking a bit of the rawness that both of those classics have.
