A very short, free story, 5.6 in the Psy-Changeling paranormal romance series, revolving around a pack of shifters outside San Francisco. The couple focus is on a pair of siblings, Kit and Rina. If you're interested, there is a chronological listing of the Psy-Changeling books on my website.

My Take
Not one of Singh's best, it's still a sweet insight into the love of parents for their children, using third person protagonist point-of-view from Kit's perspective.

Well, it may not be fair to say it's not one of her best. Singh does include a good bit of information about Kit and Rina and makes it homey as well. And it may well bring a tear to your eye.

The Story
It's a uptick in Kit's life — he's made soldier in the DarkRiver pack — and his sister carries through with their parents' wishes.

The Characters
Rina and her baby brother, Kit, are leopard shifters.

DarkRiver is...
...the cat clan in the San Francisco area with Lucas as their alpha. Dorian is a Sentinel and sniper. Barker is another packmate, who's interested in Rina.

The Title
The title is "A Gift for Kit", one into which his parents put thought...and conjures up memories.

This was adorable. A Gift for Kit is sweet, heartwarming, and a little sad. I love these little shorts into the life of characters in the Psy-Changeling world.

4 stars.

Cute and a little sad short freebie.

Rina, Kit's sister, has woken him up because she needs to give him a gift.
SpoilerBefore Rina and Kit's parent's died, Rina's dad gave her dog tags to give to Kit when he became a soldier.

I thought to skip this story but since it was short & free to read on Nalini Singh's website I decided to give it a go. I am glad that I changed my opinion.
Story is short and sweet and won't mean much to someone who did not read previous books in the series. It's not a romantic moment, but family time between Rina & Kit. I love these little additional glimpses into characters lives, I hope there will be more. :)

Ah, Kit...I often wonder about his future.

A young soldier with the scent of a future alpha. Is he going away to form his own 'pack'? Is he going to fight an alpha and take over?

Questions, questions and no answers. Interesting...
