I quite liked this, although, warning: the ending is a cliffhanger.

Been a while since I’ve read this book. It’s exciting and fast-paced, and as a Bay Area native it’s fun to be able to exactly picture all of the locations in the book. That being said, I feel like it’s sometimes overdone with the California shout-outs; it feels like too much unnecessary detail that distracts from what’s actually going on. Not a bad read for a weekend morning.

This book follows an FBI agent, Roarke, as he trails a woman connected to the death of one of his undercover agents. As he looks into who she might be, he discovers possible connections to previous murders based on a single detail that most overlook.

The book alternates between Roarke's and the woman's POVs, which is interesting and allows us to see into her thoughts and motives a bit more. While I can't justify some of her behaviors, there's a bit of understanding there.

Overall, while I wasn't crazy about the writing style, I thought the suspense was great (especially after the first couple of chapters).

Fast read, but entertaining too.

FBI special agent Matthew Roake used to be a member of the Behavioral Analysis Unit in the FBI.

Sorry..had to fangirl there for a minute.

He had dreamed of working for the FBI since the age of nine and ended up leaving the BAU because he saw what made the monsters.
He is in the middle of a case and sees one of his agents taken down by a random woman. At first he thinks she may be a "hired hit person" but then after digging deeper he realizes he is chasing a female serial killer.
The research this author did on serial killers was fascinating. I love the show "Criminal Minds" and I can see fans of that show loving this story. The book moves by so fast that I didn't want to put it down once the story got started.

This is not the typical "who done it" thriller. This is a complex chase that has the reader hanging on by a thread. At about 60% I realized that I had to have the next book in this series.

SpoilerThe bad guy in this book isn't a bad guy. It's a female who's past makes you feel for her no matter what she has done. I still am shaking my head at the way that Roake reacted to her..I thought at first it was going to turn me against the book, it didn't but I'm crossing my fingers that it "doesn't go there."

I received an arc copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was interesting all the way through and was a well thought out story. I was also impressed with the author's knowledge in the criminal justice field and that just added to the experience for me as it made everything more realistic and believable. I look forward to reading the rest of this series.
