  • the story starts slow but once it builds to a good pace it’s very interesting
  • it’s incredibly easy to get attached to every character which ultimately makes the story so much worse
  • loved the multiple povs outside the main two characters
  • i’m terrified for the 3rd book because if things don’t end how i want them to i will be heartbroken

I had previously DNFed this book about a year and a half ago. I'm not sure what changed, but I went from hating this novel to really enjoying it when I returned for a reread. It still sent me into a bit of book burnout, but that is because Kingsbane is LONG and could have been trimmed down considerably in places. While I still find Rielle's plot thread to be the weaker of our two leading ladies, I'm deeply enjoying her downfall into villiany juxtaposed with Eliana's rise from it: these two are perfectly matched and mastercrafted as foils. The ending of Eliana's plot line came a bit too out-of-nowhere for my tastes, but I'm trying to reserve judgement until I see where Lightbringer takes it: I could see it being a cheap trick for a cliffhanger or something more fleshed out and compelling. With Simon being one of my favorite characters throughout the books, I am hovering around Nervous Optimism as I write this and checkout the final installment from the library.

I gave it a 2 originally but that’s because I was tired and it was late and i was fed up with the series but I’m moving it to like a 3.5.

I don’t wanna give it a 4 because that would mean I enjoyed it more than I did. I enjoyed it for a little bit but then I didn’t. I’m moving it up to 3.5 because the ending was good and some parts of it were good but that’s it.

This series has a bad habit of being boring for me. Some people may find the parts I found boring great so that’s why I say “for me”.

Debating whether I’ll read the third book, for now I’m taking a break and reading 4th Wing to see what all the fuss is about and hopefully that’ll get me back on track.
