Funny and  cleverly written short stories that give you a glimpse into everyday life. Favorites: How to be an Other Woman, Go Like This, How to Talk to Your Mother(Notes), and How to Become a Writer.

Some stories were great, but I've forgotten what they were about. I just remember feeling the pointed hopelessness of these characters, how powerless the women were to help themselves. The writing was annoying after a while -- the jokes contrived, the dialogue stilted. I couldn't finish the last story.

These are very good but super depressing in their realism. The second story called What is Siezed wasmy favourite but again I cannot stress how heavy some of these were. If you're not in a good place then I gently suggest being careful with this collection

A different style of writing. Second-person narrative. My favorite was Mother Notes

"And when she said it, it became true. But only then, when she said it. Until then it seemed Dad was just Dad, was somehow only what he was supposed to be."

"When your parents divide, you, too, bifurcate. You cleave and bubble and break in two, live two lives, half of you crying every morning on the dock at sunrise, black hair fading to dusky gray, part of you traveling off to some other town where you teach school and tell jokes in an Italian accent in a bar and make people laugh. And when your mother"

“You reach a point,” she wrote me once, “where you cannot cry anymore, and you look around you at people you know, at people your own age, and they’re not crying either. Something has been taken. And they are emptier. And they are grateful.”
