Meredith Duran is one of my favorite authors, she has such a unique writing style that feels “old-school” but is still geared toward a modern audience. It makes her books all the more immersive because you feel like your actually in the past just based on the language the characters use.
This book had so much potential and if there would have been more focus on Adrian and Nora’s early relationship and the tension and heartbreak of them having to ignore each other in court while Nora was married to someone else. I feel like it would have easily been a 5 star book if after the initial reveal we went into a couple of chapters of what it was like from both of their perspectives in the past. Learning about that through quick flashbacks and the characters just talking about what happened was way less satisfying then seeing the characters go through it.

2.5 stars really. Beautifully written but a bit slow and overwrought for my tastes. And so many exclamation points!

Duran proves herself as agile in writing about the early Georgian period as she is writing about the 19th century. 4 1/2 stars.

Could be my broken reading. Could be the pace. I can see where this soars, but there was something off in the connection and pacing between the couple that didn't work for me. I liked the angst but it was a struggle to like the execution.
I'm leaving this unrated. Maybe I'll try it again someday.

Idk I was bored. Nothing happened and he's awful to her.

A rare miss for me from an author whose work I usually adore. Perhaps it was the politics of the time period but almost every aspect of this novel made me uncomfortable, torture scenes, dubious consent turned into sexy times and a heroine who I just couldn't sympathise with.
