Ich habe mich durch die erste Hälfte durchgezwungen, bis die Geschichte dann langsam interessanter wurde. Allerdings nicht so spannend, dass ich die Reihe beenden werde.

Not sure what I was expecting with this book - it had been talked up so much I think I was waiting for it to blow my mind with its brilliance. It didn't. It is written in a lovely style, full of great moments of adolescence and friendship, but I honestly don't know whether I'll continue with the series. If you like your books character-driven, rather than plot-driven (which I think I need in my books at the moment), this may appeal to you. I wouldn't discourage anyone from reading it, but I think maybe I picked it up at the wrong time in my life!

This is such an interesting story of two best friends Elena and Lila in the late 50s in Italy growing up in a rough and poverty stricken neighborhood. I really enjoyed the writing and the character driven aspects of this book. There is a lot of side characters and families so it can be difficult to keep up with that. This was a great start to a series though and I can’t wait to continue reading this story! Highly recommend if you like historical books with character driven stories following multiple families, love, hardship, and friendships.
