My expectations on this were high, just from the synopsis.. I mean, you got a couple of strangers, Jon, a grieving father who is contemplating whether life is worth living- picks up a hitchhiker, Jess, a woman running for her life and from a false accusation of murder- they are being “helped” by a paranormal element- they are running from a really powerful group of people, a secret organization- I was on board for ALL of that. Compelling. Fast-paced.
And then there was the reveal surrounding the title and I could not put it down after that.

2.5 stars. This started off fairly well but deteriorated from then on to a fairly silly ending

After reading this for a bit I checked the author’s information because I thought maybe this was a debut novel. It is not.
The story idea is good, but the conversations don’t flow and conversations wrap up all the information into a neat little bow, usually a single sentence to wrap up all the information needed immediately. It leaves almost nothing to the imagination because every little questionable circumstance leads into a character describing all the details in the next conversation. Even when the characters are confronted with difficult choices they go about them and then describe their crimes to anyone who will listen. It becomes wholly unbelievable pretty quickly, which is a shame because the story idea is one that would keep my interest.

The goodreads rating was at a 4.48 when I read this. I think I was expecting too much. This book has a great concept. Good bones. It's written pretty well, but two things:
There is a romance aspect that was written weird to me and definitely wasn't needed. I was totally into the book without it.
Second, I wanted more from the climax and ending, but that's OK. This could because of more flat characters, but we're working with 300 pages so it's not the worst.
Overall, not a bad read, but not comparable to 2023-day thrillers.

What an incredibly odd but also incredibly interesting book. Parts of it were a tad overdone or not given enough attention but I definitely can’t say I wasn’t intrigued and kept the pages turning quickly.

It started out promisingly, but I think that the supernatural (paranormal?!) aspect was so strange to have in a book that could absolutely have been a brilliant one without it. It feels like a story that would do better as a film than a book. The conspiracy as well seemed far-fetched and the end was just such a quick one... tied up too conveniently. Such looooong passages of explanation
