Drifters' Alliance was a quick, light read - if you enjoy "Firefly style" sci-fi (misfit group stuck on a ship journeying through space) you will chew through this easily. Elle Casey's writing flows, the plot rollicks along at a nice pace (not to fast, but not the back-breakingly slow that can be a common denominator to this slice of the sci-fi genre) and I really enjoyed the diverse cast of characters involved and learning more about them all.

If there was one disappointment it was the length - this is more novella than full length novel. I felt lucky to have picked it up during a sale, because if I'd paid normal price for the e-book I would have felt a little ripped off. As it is, I'd happily continue the series but will be waiting for promotions!

Same shit different day.

A woman claws her way to a position of power not by virtue of her intelligence, merit, or skill, but rather by luck, her feminine wiles, and/or her scrappy ability to cheat the system.

Once there she's only able to maintain her hold using violence and then of course needs a big strong guy to come man-splain everything and validate her decisions, all while objectifying her with zero subtlety as nothing more than a sex object - which she accepts as par for the course because a. that's just how things work/how he is and b. she needs his help, poor little thing

UGH!

NO THANKS

A fun, high adventure space romp with a colourful cast of characters. Does a great job as book one of a series, world building, has you invested in the characters and their stories. Is really just an all kinds of fun read.

This was one of those books where I wished I had half-stars, because I'd have given it 3.5 stars. It was a good, enjoyable book, but… it felt to me like the ending was premature: while it was a natural ending to a story, my sense was that the story that would be told was a larger one. I think this might be a case where book titles could have helped: they could have shaped my expectations for the story it told. (I will also say that, as a reader, when multiple books share the same title, with only book numbering to distinguish them, red flags fly for me, and I almost expect that it is functionally a single book that has been divided for reasons of price point or marketing.)

Will I buy [b:Drifters' Alliance, Book 2|25901557|Drifters' Alliance, Book 2 (Drifters' Alliance, #2)|Elle Casey|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1440741455l/25901557._SY75_.jpg|52118920]? To be honest, I don't know. I would like to read it, but these are short books and given my dissatisfaction with the ending of this book, I almost feel like I would need to buy both Books 2 & 3 or neither of them. At this point, I expect the ending of Book 2 to disappoint me, so I have to take it on hope that the Book 3 ending, the last of the series (at least so far, since the Book 2 description says it is "Book 2 in a series of 3 or more") will be satisfying.

To try to sum up, I enjoyed the book, but am not sure whether there's enough of it to be worth the cost of the next books in the series: if my library had them or if they were on Kindle Unlimited, I would give them a look, but Book 1 didn't convincingly entice me to buy the next book. (But I still may buy it.)

a simple fast read, a universe not unlike that of FireFly where a young woman Cass wants to get her own ship and be her own captain, dodging the OSG and their military might. it’s exciting, good characters, very little actual violence but a fair few threats of it.

Cass is extremely tough, special forces tough, and there’s a mystery to just how she got to be so very tough. there’s no hint of romance here, just space ship adventures with a ragtag crew. i could eat up books like these in a weekend - and i did!

Elle Casey has a certain simplicity in writing style but I enjoy her books because of the plot lines. I find myself drawn in even as I have misgivings about the characters or the prose. My only issue was the whole precious virginity thing. Let's take it down a notch there, Mary. Pushing this idea that the only valuable female is an untarnished, virgin female onto young readers is simply unacceptable in this day and age.

Took me longer then I thought to read this book, but I enjoyed it. It was fast paced and a good introduction to the world the author has created. I can't wait to read the next book as things are just heating up.

A quick, light read that I binged in a couple of hours. It's far too short, feeling more like a pilot episode to a TV series, which is somewhat appropriate as fans of shows like Firefly will feel right at home with a cast of misfit ship crewmembers who have been thrust together and bumble their way through misadventures. It does leave you feeling like the story is just beginning, though, which is a little unsatisfying.

Despite the brevity and lack of depth, I really enjoyed it. The writing is simple and crisp. I was a little worried in the first chapter when some of the descriptions were a little heavy-handed, but it quickly becomes primarily dialogue with lots of humour. There were tense moments with plenty of suspense that kept you hanging, and there was just enough exposition and worldbuilding to keep you intrigued and interested in the backstory of the universe without being either too much of an infodump or leaving things vague and confusing. Almost a perfect balance of information, actually. You get a sense of the world and the characters within it, and they all react in ways that feel genuine.

I'm impressed by the characters so far, but I tend to bias that direction. The main character is great. She's a teenager, and she thinks like one. She's constantly battling internal uncertainty and insecurity while putting on a show for everyone around her. It's wonderfully insightful character building. The rest of the crew are animated and vivid characters with some real chemistry. I'm curious to see where the series will lead.
