my god, jesse q. sutanto never misses!
i feel like i’ll read just about anything she writes - her stories always have the most insane starting and then lead up to the most entertaining plot unraveling i can (hope to) imagine. this book was much of the same, with characters that were so much fun to read about; set in the allure and beauty (and coffee!) of indonesia. (seriously, there was so much coffee in this book, i feel gratified) (like, i think it tricked my brain into a caffeine high)
i do, however, feel like the book could’ve been much more nuanced and/or developed better. i found it easier to ignore at more points than not, but the penultimate sequence just got.. really random and lost the overall plausibility of the book for me. (good thing i don’t read romance books for the credibility tho.. sooo) (it’s 7am, i haven’t slept, i’m really just saying stuff)
so.. 3 stars. i really liked this so much, and had the best time reading it! thank you to delacorte press for the arc.

I'm wondering if I would have enjoyed this more if I hadn't listened to the audiobook. The narrators did a good job, but Sutanto makes narrative choices that, I think, come across as a little cringey when read out lout. That being said, I like Sharlot's voice a lot more than Kiki's in the second installment and, while the conflicts, for the most part, were silly, they weren't unbearably contrived.

I think Sutanto did a better job of balancing silly issues with really world issues in this book and the cast of characters was likable overall.
