Imagine a team of humanoid dinosaurs battling a different team of humanoid dinosaurs for the fate of the planet Earth. That's what you get in Jurassic Strike Force 5, a new comic that feels a little bit like an old 1980s cartoon/toy commercial (think Transfomers or G.I. Joe).

When excavators in the Arctic accidentally awaken something in the ice, they find themselves under attack by armored dinosaurs. Their evil leader Zalex is responsible for these genetic mutations from a trip he made to Earth in the distant past. Fortunately, a force for good has created an equal force.

Initially, I had problems with this, but to be honest, I'm not the target audience. This is totally for 8-12 year olds who can read something like this and not be bothered by a shining tank coming out of million-plus year old ice. And the 2 sides are completely equal. There are 5 different dinosaurs on the evil side and the same 5 different dinosaurs on the good side. So fights are T-Rex to T-Rex, etc. Kids should love it. I was not as thrilled.

This book came in the August 2016 Comic Bento box. The dinosaur characters fit the theme. I had a hard time getting into this one though.

The story and the way this is told reminds me of the cartoons I used to watch on Saturday mornings. It features five anthropomorphized dinosaurs and their human companion battling a villain with his own dinosaur troupe and bent on taking over the universe. It is pretty over the top at times. A group of humans find the bad guy locked away in the artic and open his prison to accidentally unleash him on the world. The good guys show up to stop him and much fighting happens.

There were a number of elements that made this book not for me. The drawings of the dinosaurs were cool. It was nice to see a range of different species represented. The humans felt off to me though, both in the art and the characterization. I could have done without them entirely. The plot is ridiculous, which usually doesn't bother me. My biggest problem came with the characters though. There are at least a dozen different characters featured and I feel like I learned nothing about them. This book is all about the action. I would have preferred more information on the characters and their relationships.

I enjoy comic books, graphic novels, and manga, so the format appealed to me. I think kids will enjoy the combination of aliens, dinosaurs, and heavy artillery. It's a bit like "Jurassic Park" meets the Dinobots. The Reptilians are trying to conquer the Earth and the Strike Force members are trying to stop them (with the help of their human friends, Tyler and his dad). There are major action sequences, smart one-liners, and lots of firepower. Kids will also appreciate how Tyler's video game skills are put to use. If you know readers who like action, sci-fi/fantasy stories, or dinosaurs, recommend this series to them.

There is a bonus collection of extra cover art at the end. You can also visit www.comixology.com and download issue #0 for free.
