Great characterization, main character is very honest about herself, even her flaws which made it a very funny read

“Maybe that’s what children were: a desperate need that opened you up, even if you didn’t want it.”

Dang! This book. Thoughts:

- Uses bursting into a flames as a very flexible metaphor for children living with trauma / ptsd / panic disorder, works well for autistic ppl too! Author said he wrote some of it about his experience with Tourette’s. Actually a fascinating look at trauma / disability from the right angle

- THE KIDS’ DIALOGUE ACTUALLY BEING WRITTEN REALISTICALLY LIKE HOW KIDS TALK WAS SO REFRESHING

- everyone who thought Lillian’s dialogue had too many fucks— fuck off lmao

- gets very slow burn for a bit, but it’s kind of nice if you’re into that sort of thing. like you’re living with the characters growing alongside them :’)

- Lillian and Madison my tragic star-crossed gay people who were so toxic and terrible … beloved

- Literally no one talked about them in any other review of this book I read so this is me saying: I FELT VERY SEEN AS A GIRL WHO ALSO WAS IN LOVE W A GIRL W/O MY BEST INTERESTS AT HEART AND MADISON IS STILL A GIRLBOSS SLAY QUEEN AND STILL SUCKS. (“She would hurt me, but I would allow it” is going to haunt me forever)

- Also Timothy is the funniest character of all time. Small little child with his little damn opera glasses

- Karl I love you so much dude

- Did anyone else feel like Karl & Lillian should have ended up together??? Idk their personalities contrasted so hilariously and the way they grew on each other.. they deserve to escape together #TOME

- Marin Ireland you read audiobooks like a god

- Surprising Tennessee emphasis and like political subplot but also the most wholesome thing

- Deserves a sequel if you ask me

Messy thoughts but I just loved it.
Like aghhh!!! Why aren’t more people talking about this book?? This was so short yet immersive and poetic and damn underrated!!!!!!

“How did people protect themselves? How did anyone keep this world from ruining them?”

loved this book. Bessie and Roland are wonderful characters full of life. I’d love to read this all over again.
