2.5 stars rounded up becasue I feel like a jerk giving a book 2 stars unless it's borderline BAD. And this isn't BAD, it's just sort of blah.

The characters are ok but not overly likable. I listened on audiobook and, while the narrator was fine for the most part, a few of his "voices" really grated on my nerves. Especially Astrid. Oh my God that was torturous.

It got interesting for a bit, but the big end fight scene was sort of a let-down and I can't believe Lilah just walked off at the end and she and Kell made ZERO EFFORT to try and maintain any sort of friendship or relationship after what they had just been through! Like, could he not have helped to set her up in Red London!? Introduce her to a magic teacher or help her find an apartment? He's just like "you don't belong here" and she's like "I'll figure it out" and wanders off to acquire a boat.

I put the sequel on hold at the library, but after reading some reviews on #2, I'm not sure if I'm going to continue this series.

I was expecting more out of this story than a glorified push to return the ring to the fires of Mount Doom. We have the dutiful hero, a rebel girl obsessed with becoming a pirate, some weird Danes that remind me of Goldmember (sorry that's an intrusive thought)... There's briefly an old sage that points out something about one of the main characters that would very much change the others' perception of them YER A WIZARD HAR---sorry no. Anyways, I wanted to enjoy it more than I did but there was too much new character intro followed by prompt kill-offs that made me feel like we were wasting time off camera.

The audiobook narrator did a good job and his female voice wasn't terrible. The accents to differentiate between some characters were decent as well, but as mentioned before, the Danes accent was very I LOVE GOOOOOOOLD for me. I might continue the series on audiobook from the library but for now, I'll pick up other more pressing books in my TBR pile.
