Terceira leitura de Javier Marías – depois de ‘Coração tão branco’ e dos ‘Os enamoramentos’. Tive a sensação, ao longo dos três, de estar a ler o mesmo romance, embora não exatamente: o estilo, o mote de Shakespeare, as escutas na penumbra, a marcação e desmembramento de determinadas frases chave, que vão revelando o seu significado, inicialmente misterioso, numa mecânica narrativa algo semelhante à de um policial, e uma dilatação temporal muito própria. Por esta razão, tendo já escrito sobre as anteriores leituras, corro o risco de me repetir. Neste romance, o tempo, a sua distensão e administração, é crucial. É esse repuxar que cria a tensão dramática. A história poderia ser contada numa dúzia de páginas, mas é o seu lento tricotar, o gotejar quase intolerável de sugestões adiadas e só mais tarde confirmadas, que lhe dá corpo, tornando-a de certa forma irreal, e irremediavelmente literária; exigindo do leitor não um investimento na suspensão da descrença, mas uma aceitação mais perversa, de que mesmo sem ela, estamos interessados. Há casos em que o estilo serve a história, mas neste caso é a trama, um mero pretexto, que serve a prosa da Javier Marías – uma melopeia verdadeiramente encantatória.

Thus Bad Begins was a bit of a weird one to try and place, in my opinion. Reading it, I imagined it was written in the mid-twentieth century, or earlier, but it was actually published in 2014. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just had a much more classic vibe, so I was shocked when I realised how recently the book was written.
Set in the 1980s, the main character Juan de Vere is the assistant of a prominent film director, Eduardo Muriel. He lives in Muriel's house and observes the breakdown in Muriel's marriage to his wife Beatriz. He's witness to Eduardo's coldness in his behaviour to her, her weeping and their arguments. At the same time, he's convinced that Dr Van Vechten, who often visits the house, is cruel to women and starts to follow him to investigate his life.
This was a much longer book than I expected it to be, and in all honesty not masses happened in it in comparison to its length. However, it was incredibly well written. This was a kindle read for me, so I only read it before bed each night, but it took a couple of months to finish. I didn't lose interest in it, or forget what happened as I was reading, which often happens if a book takes so long to get through. I really wanted to know what the issues that Beatriz had that were hinted at, and to discover what was happening with van Vechten.
This is one of, if not the, most sensitive and astute book that I've read that deals with mental health issues that isn't a YA read. It discusses depression and suicide in a way that's neither brash or flippant or even patronising. These are part of the characters' lives and form a natural part of the narrative. It looks at manipulation, deceit and gendered power relations in a really strong way. I've given it four stars because, despite its length, it was a well-written, insightful read.
I would recommend this if you like books like 'Love in the Time of Cholera' or are interested in reading a book by a Spanish author.

Tried to get into this three seperate times and couldn’t, just ended up skimming . I liked The Infatuations.

Leer este libro ha sido una experiencia extraña... Para empezar, siempre que uno se adentra a una lectura de Javier Marías, tiene que ir mentalizado de que la trama apenas va a avanzar y de que las frases van a ser largas y el texto, denso. Y yo, que justo salía de una lectura hiperamena —al menos en comparación— he sentido muchísimo el cambio. Sé que las digresiones que suele hacer el autor son interesantes (yo creo que más a nivel reflexivo y erudito, que a nivel narrativo), pero llega un punto en el que empieza a cansar, la verdad. En cuanto a la historia que se nos cuenta, sí, la verdad es que la he disfrutado, me ha atrapado la tensión y el suspense que se crea, pero no hay ningún punto positivo que gane al hecho de que el ritmo es extremadamente lento y que, en ocasiones, se puede hacer muy cuesta arriba...

Yıl 1980. Franco dönemi sonrası İspanya yeni kimliğine bürünürken bir yandan da geçmişin izleri temizlenmeye çalışılmaktadır. Genç Juan de Vere ünlü yönetmen ve yapımcı Eduardo Muriel’in sekreteri olarak çalışmaya başlar.
Bir evin içinde yaşananlardan İspanya tarihini, değişim sonrası İspanyol halkının psikolojisini, sırlarla gerçeklere ve pek tabii ki evlilik kavramına uzanan koca bir dünyayı önünüze seriyor Marias.
Yine sırlar eşliğinde gelen gerçeği bilmek mi bilmemek mi dilemması ortaya çıkıyor. Bu sefer odak noktasıysa anlatmak değil de insanlığın “gerçek” kavramının peşinde koşarken aslında gerçeği ne kadar istediği üzerine. Bu konu ikili ilişkiler üzerinden toplumsal alana kadar uzanıyor. Franco dönemi sonrası İspanya’yı ve halkın diktatörlük döneminde yaşanan her şeyi unutup her şeyi affetmeye hazır olma halini bir yandan da kurbanların sesi olmamasını acımasız bir gerçeklikle anlatıyor. İşin kötü yanı, karakterlerinin duygu ve düşüncelerini okuyucuya, o kadar yalın bir şekilde geçiriyor ki kurtuluş duygusunun ardından gelen, her şeyi hasır altı edip unutma hissini anlayabiliyorsunuz. Marias’ın kitaplarında artık bir klasik olan insanlığın tabuları ve bunlara dair iki yüzlülüğünü burada da tekrar ortaya dökülüyor.
Kitabın diğer kitaplarından bir farkı ise yazarın sarsıcı sondan bunda biraz vazgeçmiş olması. Sonun ipuçlarını size kitabın her aşamasında ufak ufak veriyor zaten. Hatta son bölümü yazarken kendisinin dahi biraz sıkılıp bitirmek istediğini dahi düşünüyorum zira cümleleri git gide kısalıyor ve biraz alelacele kapatılmış gibi. Yine de kendisi objektif davranamadığım yazarlardan olduğu için beni rahatsız etmedi bu durum. Yine sevdiğim bir kitap oldu. Son olarak, bir noktada da Peter Wheeler’i yeniden karşımıza çıkarması ile hoş bir nostalji oldu.

Промених си мнението - няма да я дочитам. На 40% съм с ужасно много прескачане и просто е безумно да продължавам да диря финала на историята, безразлично ми е как приключва, защото наистина много се отегчих.
