It was a good well rounded story but the world has many more secrets to share. I would enjoy another from this place.

My kind of hero

The people of the mountain are all born with a talent. Dirk happens to be violent and uses that talent to rescue his cousin.

Neal creates a blend of grit, atmophere, slow burning drama, and a tiny bit of magic into a grim, short tale of a man's unstoppable drive to rescue his cousin from evil. The book is rich with color and nuanced speech from the variety of characters, as well as cinematic descriptions of goregous landscapes that remind me of Northern Europe or even the Appliachains of the eastern U.S. Excellent action in small bites, a tiny touch of romance and subtle world building that lends itself easily to other stories. And a short, discreet read as well.

There's a country feel to this fantasy world, a powerful sense of place -- and that place is mountainous and rough, but also full of beauty. The characters & and plot move at a steady pace, one that feels unhurried but rolls inexorably forward with deceptive speed. From the very first page there's a delicious sense of deep, dark evil lurking in green hollows & behind gnarled trees--and the resolution of the quest lives up to that promise.
Excellent storytelling, start to finish.
