In terms of “how we got here” and “where we go from here” this book was definitely heavier on the first part. I like how the distilled down all the various issues into a pretty readable short book. The appendix was the “what to do about it” part, which mostly talked about figuring out which issue is most important to you and then focusing on how to improve the way your lifestyle contributes to that issue. So like I’m kind of obsessed with plastic and how it lasts forever (which I learned from The World Without Us by Alan Weisman and will never forget and pretty much haunts my dreams), so I have made a point to try and use less plastic, especially disposable type plastics. It is HARD. Anyway, I always think about our tiny little actions and how they can’t possibly compare to the damage being wrought by huge companies that we have no control over, but I guess we should focus on what we can control. I definitely learned some stuff from this book, but a lot wasn’t new to me which is totally not Hope Jahren’s fault. I wanted more about actions we can take, and more about what is being done around the world to combat climate change. But I think this would be a great introduction to this issues for someone who hasn’t really read much about it before.

A truly thought-provoking primer on where the world stands with regards to the factors influencing climate change, as well as some practical advice about what we, as individuals, can do to contribute to mitigating the effects of climate change. Jahren presents the information in understandable and interesting bits, and she has a knack for making her writing approachable. Though this isn't exactly the most humorous of topics, she also manages to add some lightheartedness to it.

Highly recommended for anyone who's curious about the changes occurring on our planet, as well as anyone who would like some suggestions about where they can start in their own efforts to protect the planet for future generations.

ONE INDIVIDUAL STEP AT A TIME - BECOMES AN EARTH ARMY ON THE MARCH. In an easy reader format, Jahren succinctly introduces or reminds us that Hell or High Water is looming inevitably around the corner, regardless of other assaults on the virus front. We can not turn back time, but we can mitigate our poisoned-future effects.
