If this play had some greater meaning, it went way over my head. Had no idea what was happening, there was too much repetition, and John was very introspective for a 10-year-old.

People seem to love Mamet. My playwriting prof sure does.

However, The Cryptogram, in short, is boring. I remember the plot of almost all 12 plays I read last semester. This one? I remember the least. I read the play, was underwhelmed and promptly forgot everything about it.

Frankly, I don’t care all that much about this. Looking back there are some interesting ways to attack this theatrically. But I would definitely prefer other shows.

3 stars.
