A bit confused. And no real through story. Mostly just Bobby not picking up guys in a gay bar. But as a character book it was pretty good, and that's what I prefer anyway. So a bit of X-23, a bit of Bobby an Idie and Evan. And even old young Scott got to be more awesome than Scott usually gets to be.

This is gonna be a bit spoilery and have some shots from the comic.

Imma have to eat my words from my review of book one re:Hopeless.

I read these in single issues, and the first issue is the Laura/Warren issue in which Hopeless demonstrates that he read old Laura content AND he noticed the disparity in the way she talks now.

They "discuss" (read: yell while punching things) how she used to cut, and how Warren sees her rush into danger all the time and believes she's still trying to hurt herself. They don't go into a lot of psychological details, but Warren shares a few of his own demons:

Basically this issue was everything I needed to see for me to feel okay with post-Bendis Laura. I want more of this. I don't want this to be the end of the conversation. Please, Hopeless, send more.

Issue two is the "Idie and Evan take Bobby to a club to teach him to flirt" issue. It had all the expected "Bobby is an idiot when trying to interact with other human beings for any purpose other than to make them laugh." I'm not sure how I feel about Idie in this issue, although I really don't know her that well. But the Bobby stuff was good, I think. I continue to like what Hopeless is doing here.

Issue three (or 14, if you're looking for the single issue) was Scott's big chance, and it was pretty great. The issue discusses Scott's obsessive nature, how he can't play video games... or any games, really, because he will become obsessive about it. "Anything that involves problem-solving, strategy, or obsessive repetition of a practiced skill can be sort of dangerous for me," Scott thinks. It is an incredibly on point, under-examined part of Scott's personality. The rest of the issue is framed on-and-off as a video game:

Oh yeah, Scott had his legs crushed and he's currently in a wheelchair. Which, aside from the Xavier overtones, is kind of cool. I will say, he's a little more mobile than he should be (he's on crutches by the end of the book, after stating that he hasn't even been able to start physio yet), but he drags himself around for most of this issue.

From here on out, the narrative zooms out a bit has to deal with the plot a little more. Scott and Hank are one team, dealing with Hank's personal demons as well as Hank's actual demons that he accidentally let loose. Hank does a lot of Hank-like whining. This kid's self esteem, man. Finally the rest of the team finds them, after spending all night chasing down Hank's OTHER actual demons that he didn't realize got loose, at which point Evan says what we're all thinking:

Demon hunting ensues, Hank does... something. I'm interested to see what happens there. Despite it being an attempt to stop being so Hank about everything, it's a very Hank thing to do.
I would be remiss not to point out that Idie is a badass:

All in all, I really liked this book. It took a while for Hopeless to pick up speed, but I'm enjoying what's going on now. Unfortunately, I believe the run is on hold until IvX gets going and AAAAAAUUUURG I hate everything.
Having said that, Hopeless's Spider Woman run through Civil War II managed to hold up, so maybe this will too. At the very least, it's REALLY nice to read an X-Men book again without wanting to peel my skin off.

And just for funsies, here's another cap I didn't actually use in the review, but I really enjoyed:

made me laugh out loud several times. X-Men play with time travel and elder gods. Not a deep story but some excellent quipping.

Pretty fun. Highlight was for sure the Bobby-club scene.

X-men during this period is just okay and this volume was meh. I'll probably read volume 4 since it finishes off the series, but I didn't care for this series overall and this volume was just not up to my standards off the X-men. I think the time displaced X-men have overstayed and really need to find a way home soon.

(Read as single issues.) I didn't get back into comics until Secret Wars last year so I have a ton that I'm catching up on. Despite not having read an X series since the original Age of Apocalypse event back in...95? I think? I don't feel super confused with this series. For once. Which is nice. This is an easy read and I'm curious exactly what Hank is going to do about this current mess.

This run continues to be better than Bendis's time on All-New X-Men. Moving beyond pure team action and plot movement, we see Bobby go to a gay bar for the first team, Warren and Laura's continuing relationship issues, Scott do a Rear Window with SNES graphics investigation of Hank's latest scheme, and an annual devoted to Idie. The team action's still there (in the form of a rather meh Goblin Queen), but is adding onto the individual issues in a way that makes it actually worthwhile this time.
