I loved this! Music teacher "Mr. K" makes Tiger Mother Amy Chua look tame. Joanne Lipman (former student) and Melanie Kupchynsky (daughter and student) have collaborated on this lovely memoir of a gifted teacher. Mr. K, a Ukrainian immigrant, endured much suffering throughout his life. But his dedication to developing talented, confident, daring young people was unsurpassed. His methods (lots of yelling, ranting and raving, insisting on perfection, signing the kids up to play all over the state, private lessons in his basement) wouldn’t be tolerated today but his students rose to the occasion and beyond. They clearly loved him in spite of being annoyed by him. Many of his former students came back to play at his memorial service. In alternating voices, Melanie and Joanne tell Mr. K’s story of tragedy and triumph. A wonderful and inspiring read. (To be published October 2013)

A riveting account of the influence of a special man -- teacher, father, son, husband, musician -- and the added elements of oppressive regimes, chronic illness, and a murder case. The co-authors make it delightful to read and both memorable & reflective on the aspects of education, family, and, of course, music.
