Well... that was weird.

I can't say that I liked it, or that I liked the main character who really is a complete mess of a human, with little, to no, self awareness. But, as the story progresses you start to understand maybe why she is that way... and the book definitely highlights aspects of Wellington and New Zealand culture that I was unaware of.

I guess I'm glad I read it? I wouldn't call it a comedy, or eco, to be honest. Tragic? Disturbing? But then, maybe I'm just not literary enough?

I have come to understand Anne's writing as unusual, even quirky, so I felt I was prepared for a reading that would tip me out of my comfortable chair, and I wasn't disappointed. This book is brilliantly bold and lyrical. The main character is totally unreliable, but then, so is the Wellington weather. No room of one's own, she says somewhere in the book, things change, and it's in this place of unease that I find the bold and resilient character of Janice. I laughed, I cringed, I sighed, and in the end, I salute her. Keep going I want to tell her. Overcoming is never a pretty place in life.
