Third in the "A Long Way from Chicago" series. A great book series for kids 10-14"ish". Richard Pecks weaves a great story about not judging books by their covers and things are not what they seem. I also like the fact that these books are in the early to mid-1950's.

In this book - it tells of Grandma Dowdel from a different perspective - her new neighbors. The hi-jinx are not as detailed as the first two books; but I like the perceptive.

I try to read the books I give to my kids instead of just passing them along on a suggestion - I am glad I read all of these because I enjoyed them.

An outsiders look into the life of Grandma Dowdle. A lot of fun to read about how she helped a new family settle into small town life. Full review here: http://www.compassbookratings.com/reviews/index.php/review/view/2023

I really enjoyed the other 2 books about Grandma Dowdel. This was just as fun. It was my Christmas in July moment. I now want to try reading other books by Richard Peck. The only 3 I have read are a series of sorts. (What is the origin of the song, "Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam"? I was surprised to see it referenced in this book.)

I think Richard Peck is the author I would most like to meet. I love his storytelling. Most of his books I have listened to on audio and they were all fantastic.
This one did not disappoint. It's wonderful.

Touching Funny Story set in 1958. Great characters. Mrs Dowdel is a unique neighbor to say the least. She seems to be busy and keep to herself but she knows the goings on of everyone in town and she has a big heart. Very cute Christmas story.

I’ll take any excuse to spend more time with Grandma Dowdel, especially around the holidays. I so look forward to sharing these delightful books with my kids when they’re older. My favorite part of this one is the relationship between Ruth Ann and Grandma Dowdel… there’s something so delightful about watching her sharing her no-nonsense approach to life and myriad skills with the next generation. I do wish we would have gotten more of a glimpse at what Mary Alice is up to these days, but it’s a small complaint.

This was a good story. Told with memorable characters and with enough detail to feel you were a part of their community. I was hoping for a Christmas story...and there was a little towards the end, but it was mostly a story of a family, learning the ropes of a new town, and getting to know their amazing neighbor....still a great story with a Christmas ending. :)
