3-1/2 stars, rounded up just because.

I liked this book a lot more than I thought I would. I picked it up on a whim at the library because the premise sounded interesting and I kind of miss just picking up books at the library because they sound interesting.

It follows the story of Verdad, who lost her best friend Blanca almost a year ago to gun violence. Verdad is trying to figure out life without her best friend when she meets Danny, a trans boy who turns her world upside down.

Verdad is not a perfect MC, but I still liked her quite a lot.
I understand how people can give up on this book because of the narrative structure, but I think it's worth the effort to keep going. Once you get used to it, it's easier to follow everything that's happening.

This was a slog for me because the story jumped around in time and characters joined the scene without introduction and there were parts I found confusing. As an LGBTQ romance, it will get read, and I will be curious how students feel about it.

I loved this book. Verdad, the main character, isn't a perfect person, but she's one of the most realistically written characters I've read in a long time. The book is about a teenager discovering who she is and confronting some of the prejudices she might have. Anyone in that situation is bound to make mistakes and struggle with themselves, and I'm glad the book displayed that. The story has a big focus on themes such as identity, processing trauma and racism and it does an excellent job giving each of those its own room to breathe and be discussed.

DNF - 42%

I made it 42% of the way in, but couldn’t make it any further. I wanted to put this down much sooner. The story features a lot of important situations and characters, but the writing is so disjointed and really hard to follow. It was not captivating and I found myself either confused or bored.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley.
The Truth Is is such a great book. You can’t help but feel for Verdad as she tries to make sense in the complex issues of race, gender identity, belonging, sexuality, and sexual orientation, all white dealing with the violent death of her best friend. Ramos’s writing is raw and beautiful, and occasionally confusing, but that’s ok, because so are the things in Verdad’s head. I will definitely be recommending this book to others and checking out the author’s other work.

Love reading a book about a young queer boricua girl. Wish this existed when I was 15. Verdad be dropping some bars too.
