This was my first read by Piper Huguley and it was fantastic. The story of Realie and Lawrence was so real I almost forgot it was fiction. I look forward to reading more books by Ms. Huguley.

Very religious, Erich always makes me cringe even when it's historically appropriate. The love story feels lukewarm to me, the plot resolves too quickly and too neatly, and overall I just found the book far too easy to put down.

Sweetly romantic love story about a runaway slave and the lawyer who sets her free. I loved the chemistry and insightful dialogue between these two characters. I only wish the story lasted longer--I wanted to spend more time with the characters!! I will certainly be looking up the full novels in the series.

The author was a new to me recommendation.

I enjoyed this book, but really felt there was no real spark between the two main characters. They spent very little time together, yet somehow fell in love while apart. I don't normally read inspirational or historical but this came highly recommend. I am glad I gave it a chance.

I may consider reading her series, but not in the near future. I will however be helping my eye on this author and new books she writes.

Piper Huguley is probably my favourite American historical romance author. The depth of knowledge in the settings is exceptional and the sometimes brutal clarity of her view of people gives these books such backbone and depth. No rose tinted history, full awareness of how rotten systems rot the people in them, and the romances are all the stronger for it. This really is love triumphing against the odds. Cracking stuff, highly recommended.
