I'm not too sure about this book. It's about Harry Hole's investigation of a second serial killer in Norway. He's been called in because he was the policeman who uncovered their first serial killer (a killing that psychologically scarred both lead investigators).

In short, it's your typical urban police procedural murder mystery. People have been murdered, and it's down to two competing police departments (the local police, and Norway's equivalent of the FBI) to find the killer.

The killer is caught in the end, but it's a depressing book. I feel this because there was no real uplift at the end. Usually after reading a mystery, there's a sense of relief that the baddie was caught. I mean sure he was caught, but there was no sense of "phew" afterwards. Because of that I felt the book was depressing. Don't get me wrong, it was a good read, just depressing all the same.

This is my first time reading in this series, and it was an excellent mystery.

What was incredible to me was the way the author wrapped up every SINGLE loose end, loose image from the beginning of the book. Nothing was forgotten.

I did stumble a bit over the names, but that's my failing, not the author's.

Looking forward to reading more in this series.

Took a while to get into this, and was hoping it would be like a modern day Martin Beck which it didn’t quite get to, but certainly gripped me by mid way through. This was my first Jo Nesbo and although this is a standalone story, I think I would have enjoyed more if I had started at the beginning of the series or at least with The Snowman.
