audiobook while walking. had to up the speed to 1.5 as the descriptions of how much Cade wanted to have sex with Ellie got to be monotonous. I am not sure why it is that so many "romance" books have to have the man be unbelievably handsome, rugged, tall and rich. Why can't the women be rich? of course Ellie is perfect and feisty. The other aspect that is disappointing is the toxic masculinity of Cade. expecting that Ellie was his possession and immediately resorting to hitting other men when they flirted with her. Ellie made a feeble attempt to 'break up" with Cade because he didn't trust her but never did confront the patriarchal flaw in his character. Stories that continue to make women as weak damsels in distress and powerless over big strong men are not my cup of tea. The story did not really hold together well when the hunt for Heather's killer got closer to conclusion. The extreme hatred that Richard Egan, the mine company owner had for Cade did not really make sense. The fact that he would kill another woman in the same way as Heather, eight years later didn't sit right for me. I still cannot put together why he hired Frank Keller to shoot the cattle and the dog as well as blow up a mine shaft and shoot Alejandro all because of Heather. oh well. the narrator was ok, he did not try to change his voice for any of the characters but still stayed interesting.

I thought this book would be more of a thriller, but it turned out to be too romance-focused for my liking. I found myself eye rolling at the frequent mention of attractiveness of the characters and the adult scenes. I was disappointed by the book's conclusion and lack of twist. One positive: the character Ellie. I quite liked her.

This book should have been a perfect blend of my favourite genres: Romance and Thriller. It wasn’t.

The characters. Ellie was cool. She was a total badass and she actual had some kind of character. She wasn’t one of those heroines who are supposedly badass but are really just stupid and reckless. I appreciated that. However, Kade was a cookie cutter brooding cowboy/farmer with emotional trauma. That would have been fine if he had any character besides said trauma.

The romance. The romance was okay, I did understand why they liked each other but it was kind of undercooked. If they talked more and did less…of that, it would have actually been worth it. The whole romance didn’t even need to be a big plot point in the book. And because it was the thriller itself was also half as good as it should have been. The real romance should have been Alejandro and Maria(I ship so hard)

The actual plot. It’s a good storyline but it was executed badly. The author should have made it a romance or a thriller. Not both. It was made worse by the fact that this book was under 300 pages long. It just didn’t work for me. The ending was so boring and the way the investigation unfolded was just okay. What’s weird is that I had a weird sense of Deja Vu whole reading this book, so if there is another book exactly like this somewhere please tell me.

So 2.5-3 stars. Not bad but not good.

Loved the ranch setting, the action, the characters, and the mystery, but the overdone sex and continual innuendo made the book read like a trashy romance novel.  I finished it for the outcome, but this is my first and last Kat Martin book.

Ellie and Kade have similar experiences in their past that have made them leery of falling in love again. They both do everything they can to fight the attraction between them, but with working together and as Kade's jealousy keeps building they can no longer fight it. I liked how the case just kept building and going in different directions. In this book we get romance, suspense, mystery, friendships, and closure. As you meet different characters, you aren't sure who the killer is until this one moment where all the clues come together. Its a great ah ha moment. I enjoyed this book and am glad I gave it a chance.

Received ARC in exchange for voluntary honest review from NetGalley.
