There's something special about watching a writer grow. Book 1, Perishables, is entirely different from the rest of the series. It's an experiment in which you see a universe being shaped. In Tooth & Nail and Deal with the Devil, the world is fully formed, the characters flesh out, and the first few clues that something bigger is going on emerge. Attempted Immortality takes everything that was good about the first three books and adds the element of truth.

Not the truth of vampires obviously, but rather the truth of the human condition. A touch of that particular type of honesty makes for the best jokes and characters. When applied judiciously, it makes for those moments where you find yourself nodding in agreement or smiling in understanding.

All in all, an excellent adventure with old friends and many good laughs.
