I give it a 3.5/5 stars. It took me a while to finish because some of it was difficult for me to understand. I got lost in the sequence and all that so I finished this novel without quite understanding the bigger arch. I did find myself enjoying the episodic parts where I got it and it clicked. I like the use of language, it's brutally honest but also intricately flourished. What language! I had mixed feelings about this being a story about Bechdel's dad, I am compelled by this seemingly flat but close relationship they had. It was too real and it just hit me right in the gut how Alison Bechdel was able to translate that scene perfectly with all its covert emotions which almost felt like there was a lack thereof. Fun and tragic indeed....

hm. two stars bc of the way that bechdel writes and illustrates the process of discovering one’s sexuality. and another star for her depiction of a childhood where you know but you don’t really know, yknow? but i also couldn’t get fully into it bc of the constant obscure literary references that lowk made no sense to me

There's nothing like reading such an intensely similar account of someone else's upbringing to your own. Devoured in a sitting. Amazing. Heartwrenching.

3.5 stars. Graphic novels aren’t really my thing, but my state’s reading challenge has this category for May. My daughter owns Fun Home and Maus and said this was the less depressing of the 2, so here we are.
The comics are quite detailed and the story a bit sad; overall this was an interesting read and i wish I’d seen the musical when it was on Broadway. Bechdel does a wonderful job of connecting events in her childhood into a broader context of her and her father’s sexuality.
