All 4 stars to the amazing Michelle Williams and her ‘Fo shiz, fo shiz’ rendition of the book.

I wasn’t a Britney fans before this but the trauma she has gone through has made me one. It’s a complicated story of a child who found stardom and greedy snatchers of that stardom. People, who could wait to exploit her, from her family to her partners. It’s a sad story of a girl lost in the chaos of fame and glitz. A girl who did some bad things but was penalized a hundred times more for each one of those things.

I come out of it feeling really bad for her and to be honest a little shitty for being one of those people who judged her for her looks and clucked her head watching yet another star unravel.

Once again, listen to the audio version coz the insanely talented Michelle Williams makes the whole story come alive. It’s a story that deserves to be heard.

This was so illuminating and infuriating.

I’m glad I read this, but it was absolutely heartbreaking. There were also a lot of places where I felt like detail was lacking. However, I recognize that there were probably painful limitations to writing it, and it was a gripping story.

I admire the courage and strength it took her to write about all of these terrible things that have happened in her life. I’m glad she was able to finally get out of her conservator ship and live her life now!

As far as the book goes: it’s “okay” for me. Maybe I didn’t like it as much because I listened to the audiobook version but I just felt like this was all over the place (it followed her life, but she was always going off on another story about either something from her childhood or about how she knew and felt about this particular person). But maybe i just don’t like her writing style. Overall it’s not a bad read, but I think I expected more from it.

Bullet Review:

This will never win awards for writing; saying it’s pedestrian and perfunctory is being gracious. I’m still perplexed this had a ghost writer, as I expected a ghost writer to polish it up more.

What makes this incredible is that this is Britney’s voice tell us her truth, long held back. The hurt of breakups and being hounded by the paparazzi for being a human being - and of course, the awful, infantilizing conservatorship.

I think a lot of us (myself included) were far too hard on Britney; I for one am immensely sorry for that, but am also proud of her strength and winning back her voice.
