Really liked this one, it was fast-paced, exciting, motivational, positive. It has quite a lot of text, which makes it feel like a novel, and I personally liked that. It also discusses the roller derby topic, which was new and interesting to me. The artwork is also colourful and fun.

"... the best things in life are worth fighting for."

"It takes a real hero to take a hit for the team, and to let the spotlight shine on someone else."

Loved this! It has a similar feel to "Smile" & its characters, story, and themes are fresh. You can't help but empathize with Astrid's all-too familiar tween experiences. But the book's uniqueness! A graphic novel about roller derby?! Yes please!

Wow! I didn't realize this was set in Portland, Oregon (where I live), so that was a really fun surprise. This heroine is a really unique one, so she is going to either be super relatable or not (in my case, not). However, I liked how feisty and spunky she was. This is a great one to add to lists of books on growing up and making friends. The roller derby element was so fun!

Roller Girl takes place in Portland, Oregon and follows the life of twelve-year-old Astrid. Astrid's mom takes her daughter on "evenings of cultural enlightenment" where she often drags along her best friend, Nicole, and they spend the nights rolling their eyes and laughing at the most inopportune times. These nights are quite a bore until Astrid's mom takes the girls to see the local roller derby league, the Rose City Rollers. Even though Astrid doesn't know how to skate, she immediately wants to sign up for their summer day camp to become a "rosebud," but is unaware how this will eventually effect her friendship with Nicole.

Roller Girl is a girl-powered novel geared toward teaching young girls that it's okay to be yourself and participate in things that make you happy, even if it doesn't suit everyone else. This novel handles the stresses of being an twelve-year-old girl in junior high by showing how Astrid struggles to define herself without Nicole, deals with personal growth, and strives towards her
own personal goals in roller derby.

Roller Girl was so much fun to read! Astrid is a pretty great character, struggling with the fact that she's growing apart from her best friend while also trying to figure out who she is and who she wants to be. And I have to give a shout out to Rainbow Bite, who gives great advice and really helps Astrid through her journey.
