It just wasn’t my kind of book. I was skeptical going into to it as it’s a middle grade book but there are a lot of GREAT middle grade books out there so I thought I’d give it a whirl but no joy. It just seemed very animated and young.🖤

Trigger warnings: kidnapping, death, blood, child exploitation, colonialist bullshit, death of a sibling (in the past).

I really liked the idea of this - teenage boy and his cousin and friend go to Africa with his parents and have inadvertent adventures when his parents are kidnapped. But the first hundred-ish pages of this was S.L.O.W. and I struggled to want to pick it up and keep reading. Add in the fact that the story got more and more ridiculous as the story progressed and this was...fine but forgettable.

That said, I'm curious to see if it gets turned into a series because it's been left wide open for the possibility.
